How it's calculated

The math, step by step

No hidden assumptions. Every number above comes from these steps.

  1. DeliveredEmails sent − bounced. Every rate except bounce rate is measured against delivered emails.
  2. Open rateOpened ÷ delivered × 100.
  3. Click rateClicked ÷ delivered × 100.
  4. Click to open rateClicked ÷ opened × 100. It shows how many of the people who opened went on to click.
  5. Reply rateReplied ÷ delivered × 100.
  6. Bounce rateBounced ÷ sent × 100.

FAQ

Plans start at $1,500/month. Compare plans.

Divide the number of people who opened by the number of emails delivered, then multiply by 100. Delivered means sent minus bounced. Some tools divide by sent instead, so check which one yours uses before you compare numbers.

Click to open rate is clicks divided by opens. Click rate tells you how many recipients clicked. Click to open rate tells you how many of the people who read the email clicked, so it says more about the message than about the subject line.

Only as a rough signal. Opens are counted when a tiny tracking image loads. Mail apps can load that image automatically, which counts an open nobody made, or block it, which hides a real one. Treat open rate as a trend to watch, not an exact count.

Reply rate. A reply is a real person doing something on purpose, and it cannot be created by a mail app loading an image. Many cold email senders turn open and click tracking off and judge campaigns on replies alone.

Bounced cannot be higher than sent, and opens, clicks and replies cannot be higher than delivered. If you enter a larger number, the calculator uses the highest possible value and tells you it did.
