Spintax tester and variation counter

Paste your email copy with spintax. See how many versions it can produce, read through them, and catch a missing brace before it reaches a prospect.

Your text

Braces without a bar, like {{first_name}}, are treated as merge tags and left as typed.

    How to use it

Check your spintax in four steps

It takes a minute, and it is quicker than finding a broken brace in a sent email.

    1. Paste your copyPut each set of options inside braces with a bar between them, like {Hi|Hello|Hey}. Groups can sit inside other groups.
    2. Fix anything flaggedA missing or extra brace is reported with its line and character position. Empty options are pointed out too.
    3. Read the variationsClick Show another to see random versions, and scan the list of the first distinct ones. Check that every version reads naturally.
    4. Check the countThe total is the number of combinations: the option counts of each group multiplied together.
    Writing it well

Spintax that helps an email and spintax that hurts it

Vary the parts that do not carry the message

Greetings, transitions, sign-offs and the wording of the ask are good places for options. The reason you are writing, the specific problem you solve for this reader, should read the same in every version. If it changes from email to email, you cannot tell which version earned the reply.

    Read every combination out loud

Groups that look fine alone can clash when they meet. Watch for a or an before a word that changes, singular and plural mismatches, and a formal greeting paired with a casual sign-off. The preview list above shows the first distinct versions so you can read them as a prospect would.

    Keep the count sensible

A few hundred combinations is plenty for most campaigns. Thousands of versions usually means some of them were never read before sending. More groups also means more places for a grammar slip to hide.

Test ideas separately, not inside the spin

Spintax is for variety, not for finding out what works. To compare two different pitches, run them as separate variants in your sending tool and compare replies. Keep the spintax light inside each one so the test stays clean.

Spintax is a way of writing several versions of a sentence in one piece of text. Options go inside braces, separated by a bar, like {Hi|Hello|Hey}. A sending tool picks one option from each group every time it sends, so each email is worded a little differently.

Multiply the number of options in each group together. Three greetings and two sign-offs make six combinations. Nested groups are added up inside their parent first. If two options produce the same text, they still count as separate combinations.

Yes. A group can contain other groups, like {a quick question|a {short|brief} note}. The tester reads them to any reasonable depth and counts them correctly.

Braces with no bar inside are not treated as spintax. They are left exactly as typed, so merge tags stay in place for your sending tool to fill in. Check your own tool's format, since some use a different style for variables.

Not by itself. Spintax keeps a campaign from sending the same text to every person, which is one sensible habit. It does not make up for a poor list, a weak sender reputation, or copy people do not want to receive.
