Lead Generation Pricing: Models, Costs and What Drives Them

Short answer: Lead generation pricing depends more on the pricing model than on the channel. Published guides put monthly retainers at about $2,000 to $5,000 for basic programs (SalesBread, 2025) and $3,000 to $12,000 for cold email agencies (Prospeo, 2026). Pay per lead and pay per appointment prices swing even wider, because every provider defines a lead differently.

  • Four main models: retainer, pay per lead, pay per appointment, and hybrid.
  • What drives the price: who you sell to, how a lead is defined, and how much of the work the provider does.
  • Watch for: cheap leads that never turn into sales conversations.

Every figure in this guide comes from a published source, linked where it appears. The sources do not agree with each other, and that is part of the story. Treat the numbers as a starting point, not a quote.

What are the main lead generation pricing models?

Outsourced lead generation is sold in four main ways. The table shows the widest published range we found for each, with sources in the sections below.

ModelPublished rangeYou pay for
Retainer$2,000 to $12,000 a monthOngoing work
Pay per lead$20 to $500 a leadEach lead delivered
Pay per appointment$75 to $1,000 a meetingEach meeting booked
Hybrid$2,000 to $5,000 base plus feesWork plus results

How much does a lead generation retainer cost?

A retainer is a flat monthly fee for a set scope of work. SalesBread’s 2025 pricing guide puts monthly retainers at $2,000 to $5,000. Belkins’ guide, last updated in January 2024, says a basic agreement runs around $2,000 a month and comprehensive services run $5,000 to $10,000. For cold email agencies, Prospeo’s 2026 review gives $3,000 to $12,000 a month, with setup fees of $1,500 to $5,000 on top.

The retainer pays for effort, not outcomes. That is its weakness and its strength. You carry the risk of a slow month, but you also keep control over who gets contacted and what is said in your name. Our guide to cold email agency pricing breaks down retainers for that channel in more detail.

How much does pay per lead cost?

Pay per lead has the widest spread of any model. Belkins lists $20 to $200 per lead, and says qualified leads start around $50 and can pass $1,000 in complex, high-ticket B2B. SalesBread gives $50 to $250 for a lead that matches your ideal customer profile. Prospeo gives $200 to $500 per lead for cold email agencies.

The gap comes down to one word: lead. A name and email from a list is a lead to one seller. A decision maker who replied and asked for a call is a lead to another. Before you compare any two lead generation services cost quotes, get each provider’s definition in writing.

How much does pay per appointment cost?

Here the provider charges for each meeting it puts on your calendar. SalesBread lists $75 to $500 per scheduled meeting. Cleverly’s June 2026 guide prices by buyer seniority: $150 to $400 for small and mid-market buyers, $400 to $700 for vice president level and above, and $700 to $1,000 or more for enterprise executives. Prospeo puts cold email agencies at $500 to $1,000 per meeting.

Booked is not the same as held. As an example, if a meeting costs $500 and 60% of them show up, each meeting that actually happens costs about $833. Ask whether you pay for no-shows. We cover this model in depth in our guide to B2B appointment setting services.

How does hybrid pricing work?

A hybrid deal pairs a lower base fee with a payment per result. Cleverly describes a base retainer of $2,000 to $4,000 a month plus $150 to $400 per meeting. Prospeo describes a $3,000 to $5,000 base plus bonuses when meetings or leads pass a target. The base covers the provider’s fixed costs. The per-result fee gives both sides a reason to care about quality.

Does B2B lead generation cost change by channel?

Yes. Sopro’s cost per lead benchmarks, updated in September 2025, list these averages. Sopro compiled them from its own research and outside sources, so read them as rough guides.

ChannelAverage cost per lead
Trade shows and events$840
Pay per click ads$463
LinkedIn ads$408
Cold calling$300
Cold email$225
SEO$206
Referrals$25

Channel also changes how the bill is built. Paid ads split the cost between ad spend and a management fee. Events are heavy on travel and staff time. Outbound channels such as cold email and cold calling are mostly labor, data and tools.

What drives lead generation cost up or down?

  • Who you sell to. Senior buyers at large companies are harder to reach, and published per-meeting prices rise with seniority.
  • The definition of a lead. The stricter the qualification, the higher the price per lead and the lower the wasted sales time.
  • Volume. More prospects means more data, more sending capacity and more replies to handle.
  • Scope. Some providers only deliver contacts. Others build lists, write copy, handle replies and book meetings.
  • Channels. Each added channel adds labor and tools.
  • Who carries the risk. Pay for results models price in the provider’s risk, so the unit price is higher.

Which pricing model fits your business?

Pick a retainer if you want a steady channel and a say in the targeting. Pick pay per lead if you have salespeople ready to follow up fast and a tight definition of a lead. Pick pay per appointment if your team’s time is the bottleneck and you can check meeting quality. Pick hybrid if you want shared risk.

Frequently asked questions

How much do lead generation services cost per month?

Published retainer ranges run from about $2,000 a month for a basic program to $5,000 or more for a comprehensive one, based on the SalesBread, Belkins and Prospeo guides cited above. Smaller providers charge less. Next Reply starts at $1,500 a month.

Is pay per lead cheaper than a retainer?

Only on paper. A low price per lead often means a loose definition of a lead. Compare the cost of each real sales conversation, not the cost of each name.

Why do lead generation prices vary so much?

Providers sell different things under the same word. Buyer seniority, qualification rules, channel and scope all move the price. Two quotes are only comparable when the lead definition matches.

Are there setup fees?

Often. Prospeo’s 2026 review puts setup fees for cold email agencies at $1,500 to $5,000. Ask what the fee covers and who owns the domains, data and lists if you leave.

What should I ask before signing?

Ask how a lead is defined, whether you pay for no-shows, who approves the target list, what the reporting includes, and what the cancellation terms are.
