Short answer: A B2B marketing agency is a company that markets one business to other businesses. It plans and runs work such as branding, websites, content, search, advertising and email so that buyers know the company and come to it. A lead generation agency has a narrower job: it finds specific buyers and starts sales conversations with them. If you need your market to know you, look at a B2B marketing agency. If you need conversations with buyers in the coming months, a lead generation agency is usually the faster place to start.
- B2B marketing agency: builds awareness and inbound interest across several channels.
- Lead generation agency: produces named contacts, replies and meetings.
- Which first: it depends on whether your problem is being unknown or having too few conversations.
What is a B2B marketing agency?
A B2B marketing agency is an outside firm that handles marketing for companies whose customers are other companies. The buyer is a manager, an owner or a buying committee, not a member of the public. Purchases are larger, involve more people and take longer, so the marketing has to explain, build trust and stay in view for months.
Some agencies are full-service and cover everything from brand to advertising. Others specialise in one area, such as content and search, paid media, public relations or websites. Both call themselves a B2B marketing agency, so the label alone tells you little. The list of services tells you more.
What does a B2B marketing agency do?
The mix differs between firms, but most B2B marketing agencies offer several of the following.
- Strategy and positioning. Deciding who you sell to and what you want to be known for.
- Brand and creative. Name, logo, messaging and design.
- Website design and development. Building the site buyers check before they talk to you.
- Content. Articles, guides, case studies, video and webinars.
- Search. Helping your site appear when buyers look for answers, in search engines and in AI tools.
- Paid advertising. Ads on search engines, LinkedIn and other platforms.
- Email marketing and automation. Messages to people who have already shown interest.
- Public relations and events. Press coverage, trade shows and industry visibility.
- Reporting. Tracking which work led to enquiries and revenue.
Most of this work is aimed at people who are not ready to buy yet. The goal is that when they are ready, your company is already on the short list.
How is a B2B marketing agency different from a lead generation agency?
They are hired for different results. The table sets out the main differences.
| Question | B2B marketing agency | Lead generation agency |
|---|---|---|
| What you are buying | Awareness and inbound interest | Contacts, replies and meetings |
| Who it reaches | The whole market | A chosen list of buyers |
| Time to first results | Months | Weeks to months |
| Measured by | Reach, traffic, enquiries | Leads, replies, meetings |
| Typical channels | Content, search, ads, PR | Email, phone, LinkedIn |
| Main risk | Hard to tie to revenue | Volume over quality |
The two overlap. Many B2B marketing agencies list lead generation as a service, and some lead generation agencies call themselves marketing agencies. Ask what the firm spends most of its time doing. A B2B lead generation agency works on finding buyers and starting conversations. A marketing agency works on being found.
Next Reply is on the lead generation side, and only one part of it. We run cold email. We do not do branding, websites, content, SEO, paid ads or public relations.
When do you need a B2B marketing agency?
- Buyers do not know your company, or do not know your kind of product exists.
- Your website, brand or messaging puts off the buyers who do find you.
- Your market is too broad to list the buyers in advance.
- You already have enough sales conversations and want to win more of them.
- You have the budget and patience for work that takes months to pay back.
When do you need a lead generation agency instead?
- You need sales conversations in the coming months, not next year.
- You can name your buyer by industry, company size and job title.
- Buyers already understand the kind of product or service you sell.
- Your sales team has time for more calls than it is getting.
- You want a cost you can compare against the meetings it produced.
Many smaller B2B companies fit the second list. They sell a known kind of service to a buyer they can describe, and what they lack is enough conversations. Our guide to outsourced lead generation covers how that work is bought. To see whether outbound would pay for itself, try the outbound ROI calculator.
Over the long run most companies use both. Outreach works better when the buyer has heard of you, and marketing is wasted if nobody follows up on the interest it creates.
What should you ask a B2B marketing agency before you hire one?
- What is your main service? A firm that lists thirty services still has two or three it does most.
- Do you work with companies like ours? Ask about your industry, your company size and your length of sales cycle.
- How will we measure progress in the first six months? Ask what early signs they track before revenue appears.
- Who does the work? Find out whether the people who pitched you will run the account.
- What do you need from us? Good content needs your experts’ time. Know how much.
- What is the fee and what is the advertising budget? Ad spend is usually separate from the agency’s fee.
- Who owns the website, content, ad accounts and data? Get it in writing.
- What are the terms? Read the minimum period and the cancellation clause.

Frequently asked questions
Is a B2B marketing agency the same as a digital marketing agency?
Not quite. A digital marketing agency may serve any kind of business, including shops and consumer brands. A B2B marketing agency works for companies that sell to other companies, where sales take longer and several people share the decision.
Do B2B marketing agencies do lead generation?
Many list it as a service. For most of them it means inbound work, such as forms, content and ads that bring people to you. Fewer run direct outreach to a chosen list. Ask which one they mean.
How much does a B2B marketing agency cost?
It varies too much to give one figure. Fees depend on how many channels are involved, and advertising spend usually comes on top. Ask each firm for a written quote. For the lead generation side, our guide to lead generation pricing explains the common models.
Can one agency do both marketing and lead generation?
Some full-service agencies offer both. The skills are different, so ask which is the firm’s main business and look closely at the other. Hiring a specialist for each is a reasonable alternative.
